Four O'clock Forever

I used to be a hatter, for hatting was my trade:
No matter what's the matter, the best of hats I made.
And time liked no one better, so never I was late
till once I failed to flatter him and love turned into hate.

What would you do if there's no time to clean the dishes?
What would you do if tea would simply not turn cold?
What would you do if it was Four O'clock forever?
What would you do if that's the only way for never turning old?

I was so keen on singing when I was in my prime
and send my voice a-ringing like any bells that chime.
To metres I weren't clining as long as ends would rhyme
till I felt a sudden stinging and they yelled »He's murdering time!«

What would you do if there's no time to clean the dishes?
What would you do if tea would simply not turn cold?
What would you do if it was Four O'clock forever?
What would you do if that's the only way for never turning old?

Cast out of time and reason I'm forced to have my tea
the changing of the seasons don't mean a thing to me.
I hope time's mind will easen, and he will set me free:
I'll do my best to please him, a sunset for to see.

What would you do if there's no time to clean the dishes?
What would you do if tea would simply not turn cold?
What would you do if it was Four O'clock forever?
What would you do if that's the only way for never turning old?
So come and join us as we circle round the table!
So come and join us, do sit down and be a friend!
So come and join us, lose your mind if you are able!
For all that's left for you and me
is tea for two and tea for three -
come join this caucus race without no end!
