The CD »Garden of the Lost«

Walking tip-toed down the hallway,
reading Elfquest on the floor,
gnawing fingernails and practising that intro just once more:
O I really should have known the very day I wrote that song
recording it would take us o so long …

Lord Landless: Garden of the Lost
Garden of the Lost

In the summer of 2001, Lord Landless spent ten wonderful (and stressful) days in Berlin with Kirstin and Volker Tanger, recording their first CD, Garden of the Lost. They played and sang in the kitchen, whilst Volker sat in his study mixing the tracks and later, like Dr Frankenstein, worked wonders to edit three flawed tracks into a clean version.

Actually, after four days of blood, sweat and tears, all the songs were in the can (or rather, on the computer), but as Thesilée had caught a nasty cold on the way there, she travelled to Berlin again on New Year’s Eve, this time with her boyfriend Peredar, who was kind enough to record a few keyboard parts as well. In the spring, Silva made another trip. Simon Fairbourn, a brilliant filker from England, was recruited for the role of the father in The Fairy King.

After the initial recordings came the phase of listening to everything with enthusiasm, the phase of listening to everything with not-quite-as-much-enthusiasm, the phase of whining, and the phase of wanting to re-record everything. Thesilée had a cold during the first recordings and gradually re-recorded most of her songs. Rattling guitar parts had to be redone. Mistress Alma was completely re-recorded. The title track, Garden of the Lost, received a new arrangement. Additional keyboard parts and new second and third voices enriched the guitar music, which at times seemed a bit dull. For The Liberty, a roaring sea shanty was successfully emulated. And, and, and…

Then came the mixing phase, the wailing and gnashing of teeth, the constant re-mixing, the ‘turn-it-all-up’ mixing, whilst at the same time Kirstin and Silva were busy as pixel-pushers to ensure the CD could also get a cover. And now the time has finally come: Order the CD via the Edition Pegasus online shop.

And that’s on it:
